Intensive career orientation workshops for researchers in transition to industry

Are you a researcher considering a career switch towards industry? Are you searching for efficient tools to advance your career and become competitive in the job market? Take part in our independent, intensive career orientation courses for researchers! We have an ambition to help you reduce the time you need to find a new career for the whole year.

Welcome Solutions is a company offering independent intensive career events for researchers, both on-site (currently in Amsterdam) and online. We are focused on combining comprehensive knowledge about the job market for PhDs with self-discovery exercise. We are practical, goal-oriented, and we always take an individual approach to the course participants. At the end of the training, you will better understand your strengths and weaknesses and have a much clearer picture of what “dream job” means for you, and how to land such a job.

We always create a nice, joyful atmosphere and a team spirit at our courses — both on-site and online. We care that participants learn from each other, are mutually supportive, and stay in touch after the course. If you are looking for a job in times of the pandemic, don’t be alone!

Our methods

We do our own R&D based on networking, field research, and psychometrics combined with machine learning. Therefore, we don’t offer yet another career orientation workshop based on textbook knowledge. During our courses, you will go through a battery of aptitude tests and exercises that will help you determine the future career path that might be best for you. But this is not all – we also keep in touch with the participants of our courses and help them further! The participants receive many homework assignments followed by an individual online career consultancy session. This additional 1-1 meeting aims to discuss the personal progress after the course and to prepare a personal strategy for the job application process together.

Our philosophy: We combine the knowledge about the job market with the self-discovery exercise.

Our courses are highly interactive. Next to the lectures and discussion sessions, they involve assignments in pairs and groups and 1-1 consultancy sessions with the coach.

Our courses include: workshops, aptitude tests, assignments in pairs and groups, and individual consultancy sessions.

We also give our participants an opportunity to register in our database. We have a number of companies in our network, and you might be called with a job offer!

The coach

Natalia-Bielczyk-book-What-is-out-there-for-me

The course is led by Dr. Natalia Bielczyk, the author of the book “What Is out There For Me? The Landscape of Post-PhD Career Tracks.”

Natalia is an entrepreneur, researcher, author, and philanthropist. She graduated from the College of Inter-Faculty Individual Studies in Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Warsaw, Poland, with a triple MS title in Physics, Mathematics, and Psychology. Thereafter, she obtained a PhD in Computational Neuroscience at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behavior in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

In 2018, she launched a public foundation, Stichting Solaris Onderzoek en Ontwikkeling, aiming to help early-career researchers find new careers in industry. Since 2019, she is also the owner of Welcome Solutions. Next to writing books on career development, she runs a YouTube channel dedicated to post-PhD careers in industry, and she blogs about careers in general. Even though she chose to work in the open market, she is still a researcher in her free time and she believes in the compatibility of science and entrepreneurship.

After a few months of working on my own on my career transition from academia and a few failed job interviews in industry, I found out about Welcome Solution and their online workshop. The description of the workshop as giving not only knowledge of the job market and practical tips for job applications but also giving keys for self-discovery is what made me invest in signing in. That Natalia was herself from a STEM PhD and based in EU as I am was also a big plus.

Taking part in the workshop delivered on every aspect I was expecting, with the added value of not only great first-hand knowledge and tips from Natalia but also the interaction with the other participants.

During the 4 weeks of the workshop, the weekly session, and the homework helped me structure my time and making actual progress on practical aspects of the job search I had been postponing otherwise (like changing the template of my CV for a more modern-looking one or looking up the procedure for becoming self-employed). I found Natalia’s knowledge of the job market and her descriptions and practical advice on the different working environments in industry really insightful and so were the “personality tests” and a session on how to manage personal finances. The 1-to-1 session was also a great opportunity after the end of the workshop to get some further personalized advice for the job search. Natalia’s enthusiasm and forward-thinking personality gave me some great energy to pour into my transition from academia. About a month and a half after the end of the workshop, I received my first job offer for a senior data scientist position in the public sector, a job I applied to follow the discussion and online search during the 1-to-1 session with Natalia. I have as well started to develop a freelance activity.

The practical tips and knowledge I received about how to approach a job search and make sure to consider my own personal values in the process are in my opinion pretty agnostic of whether you want to try and stay in academia or not and I would definitely recommend Natalia’s workshop and a companion book on post-PhD careers as part of the training of ever early career researcher.

“I participated in the online version of the Intensive Career Development Event for ECRs. I enjoyed the pace and atmosphere of it. This workshop covers much more than simply how to do plan your future career. When you are stuck with your work it’s really hard to grasp a broader perspective on your career. This workshop helped me to realize my motivations and what I could gain by pivoting to another kind of job (“to which tribe I want to belong” in Natalia’s words). The practical part about job-seeking was also really engaging (which is not always the cause, I have a comparison with another course organized by my university). The additional value of this course is a special block about personal finances and how to build your own business (as a scientist). These things are not something you could often get from such workshops. Last but not least, I liked the possibility to share experiences with other ECRs (and learning from them their solutions). Natalia covers some of those topics in her book — which is a recommended read — but the workshop dynamics offers so much more!”

    — Daniel Borek, PhD candidate, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium

“This career workshop differs from the ones I attended until now. Welcome Solutions really provides a lot of information, exercises, and homework. These gave me an opportunity to discover my likes and dislikes and it gave me a picture of what should be my next step in my career. Thank you, Welcome Solutions, for your spirit and uniqueness. Moreover, Natalia (the workshop organizer) is very natural, friendly, and intelligent. It was my pleasure to meet her in person.

I have to add that I really like the idea of meeting 1-1 after the workshop (included in the price). This gave me a feeling of personal interest in my career — something unique compared to other workshops. Also, Welcome Solutions provides a recruitment solution to help in finding a job by matching you with a potential job. And at the end of the workshop, I got Natalia’s book, ‘What Is out There For Me? The Landscape of Post-PhD Career Tracks.’ It is a great addition to the course :)”

    — Joanna Szopińska, PhD candidate, Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Center, Nijmegen, the Netherlands

“This workshop is different from all the other classes I have been to before. It shows a lot of very different professional opportunities – above all that a successful career for a doctoral graduate is not always a tenure track. The course encouraged me to take an insight into myself, find my strengths, and taught how to use them in professional life. I am pleased that I took part in this course, and thank you for the inspiring time!”

    — Martyna Płomecka, PhD candidate, Neuroscience Center, University of Zurich

“This intensive course was well structured and filled with tips and self-observation exercises that I would have never found elsewhere. Working on myself made me realize that I could have a future in the industry, how to smoothly transition there, and look for the perfect position for me. However, it also made me realize that most of the things that I enjoy at work and I am better at are present in my daily activities in academia! As it does not only matter what you do but also in which environment you want to do it, learning about the different working attitudes, tribes and environments was really important for me.

And it made me realize that I am quite happy with my freedom and current tribe in academia and maybe I don’t have to rush looking for something else! Lack of knowledge on your core competencies and future working environment can reduce your career possibilities, but a lack of knowledge on yourself and your relationship with your job might reduce your happiness for life! Take the time to discover yourself and evaluate where your natural talents and passions could fit, and let Welcome Solutions help you do that!”

    — Chiara Bastiancich, PhD, Aix-Marseille University

    Yan Shi, PhD

“I participated in the on-site version of the workshop in Amsterdam. This fast-paced, intensive one-day event gave me the most comprehensive knowledge about the exits of PhDs and Postdocs. As a PhD, you have more potentials to lead a successful career outside of academia. In this workshop, you will know better about your true self. By doing the aptitude test developed by Natalia based on the most updated scientific research, you will find the career path suits you best. Want to start your own company? Natalia will walk you through her own experience about how she started the Welcome Solutions as a PhD in data science.

More than just the knowledge, you will also learn the skills about preparing the most attractive resume and to answer the tricky interview questions. I had also a lot of fun in the practice part. Paired with a partner, do your own math, and try to set up a profitable company. Natalia opened me a new world out of ivy tower. If you are also curious about ”What is out there for me?” join the workshop, and your career will speed up.”

    — Yan Shi, PhD, Radboud University Nijmegen

“I participated in the online version of Welcome Solutions’ intensive workshop for early-career researchers in September 2020. The advantage of the online format of this course is that it is spread over four weeks, giving plenty of time for iterative improvement and feedback on our CV and cover letter. There is also a strong focus on networking, and there are many suggestions on how to maximise the efficiency of your networking. I found this very useful especially now that everybody is working from home.

The main advantage of this course, for me, is that it gives a very thorough explanation of the options available after I complete my PhD. It is nice to see that my narrow expertise in my field is actually useful in jobs outside of science. This course offered many aptitude tests to help constrain for which type of job I am best-suited. There are also useful exercises that feature roleplaying to help prepare for various workplace scenarios. There is even a 1-to-1 discussion with the instructor after the course to wrap up everything we learned and ensure we know how to apply it. Overall, I feel much more prepared and aware of my options concerning my career post-PhD.”

    — Craig Yanitski, Doctoral candidate, Universität zu Köln, Köln, Germany
